Looking Toward the Future
Family Counseling Service is proud to support World Relief of DuPage/Aurora for their 2nd Annual Conference on Friday, February 5th from 8:30 am - 3:30 pm at the College Church Commons in Wheaton, IL.

The conference is aimed to educate area professionals on working with immigrants and refugees in our suburban communities. Participants will have the option of choosing sessions from three different workshop tracks or attending all of the sessions in one track for an in-depth training on immigration issues, resettlement dynamics, or refugee youth & families.

FCS will provide CEUs for teachers, LCPCs, LCSWs and LMFTs.

Avoiding the Power Struggle

If you have ever felt like your relationship with your child is nothing but a battle of wills, you’re not alone.  This can happen whether your child is 3, 7, or 17. If you feel like you just can’t go through yet another show down, here are some tips to help avoid the mine field called the power struggle!

  1. Finding Appropriate Choices:  When your 5 year old decides she doesn’t want to wear the blue sweater with the plaid skirt, pick out two or three outfits and let her choose.  You’re teaching her that she has the power to make the decision and you trust her to make a good one.  If your teen is focused on one college and you believe he would do better at another, request that he research a few other colleges before making a choice.  Then have a discussion about the choices and remind him that you will respect his decision once the choice is made.  This promotes discussion rather than arguments.
  2. Clarify Rules :  Make sure that when rules are set they are consistent and that your children continue reading…
